Where to get Solar Eclipse Glasses

The 2024 solar eclipse is fast approaching on April 8, 2024, and if you don’t have solar eclipse safety glasses yet, now is the time to find (or make) them!

Solar Eclipse Glasses safety

You need a solar filter to view the partial eclipse stage. As we get closer to the date of the eclipse, glasses will sell out! Look for ones that are compliant with transmission requirements of the ISO 12312-2 safety standard.

If you have young kids, make sure to educate them on proper usage AND monitor them closely to avoid damage to their eyes.

Whether you’re staying put for the partial or total eclipse, or are heading towards totality, you’re going to need eclipse viewing glasses.

If you still have some from 2017, find them now. If you need them, get them ASAP. They can be really hard to get your hands on as the day gets closer.

Many organized watch parties will have some available (but only while supplies last!), or you can make a pinhole viewer to safely see the eclipse. Regular sunglasses WILL NOT provide sufficient protection!

How to tell if eclipse glasses are authentic

NASA doesn’t recommend or approve specific brands of eclipse glasses, so check the authenticity of any eclipse glasses before purchasing. Look for ones that are compliant with the ISO 12312-2 safety standard.

When you try out the glasses inside, they should almost completely obscure your vision, except for very bright items or lights.

Schools

Many schools are providing all students with one pair eclipse safety glasses. If you have students in school, check with your school district to see if they plan to send a pair home.

Libraries

Public libraries may have solar eclipse glasses available to pick up for free, while supplies last. Check with your local branch. Note: Columbus Metropolitan Library system no longer has these available.

Solar eclipse events and viewing parties
