With cooler weather, the school year in session, and more indoor events, COVID and other respiratory viruses are on the rise again. While COVID-19 still poses a health threat to people at higher risk, its recovery and outcomes are now similar to other respiratory viruses, like the flu.
Just as someone who is suffering from flu-like symptoms may want to test in order to receive the appropriate treatment, those suspecting COVID-19 symptoms should also test in order to receive appropriate treatment if need, and to prevent the spread.
Every home in the U.S. can order four FREE at-home COVID-19 tests. The tests are completely FREE — no cost whatsoever. No credit card or health insurance necessary.
How to get your free COVID-19 test kits
To get your complimentary kits, go to COVIDTests.gov and simply enter your name and address. Tests are expected to ship within seven to 12 days of the order date, according to the White House.
There is no shipping fee. Tests will be sent first-class mail via the U.S. Postal Service.
Tests are limited to four per household, regardless of the number of residents.
According to the CDC Updated Respiratory Virus Guidance (as of 9/24)
The updated Respiratory Virus Guidance recommends that people stay home and away from others until at least 24 hours after both their symptoms are getting better overall, and they have not had a fever (and are not using fever-reducing medication). Note that depending on the length of symptoms, this period could be shorter, the same, or longer than the previous guidance for COVID-19.
It is important to note that the guidance doesn’t end with staying home and away from others when sick. The guidance encourages added precaution over the next five days after time at home, away from others, is over.
