Celebrate National Pollinator Week with a Free BioBlitz and Family-Friendly Activities at Pollinator Palooza in Columbus
WHEN: Saturday, June 22, 2019 from 11 a.m. – 3 p.m. EDT
WHAT: BioBlitz, a hands-on learning experience taking place during Franklin Park Conservatory’s Pollinator Palooza event this National Pollinator Week. This collaborative race against the clock helps people discover as many species as possible within a set location over a certain time period. Using a smartphone app, iNaturalist, participants will search for and document the biodiversity of Franklin Park, with a focus on pollinators like bees, butterflies, hummingbirds, beetles and wasps.
Additional family-friendly activities will take place at the Ortho® Gro More Good booth – children can create pollinator seed balls to take home and plant, “bee educated” on how to protect pollinators, and capture fun pictures at a photo station.
The Pollinator Palooza event also features exploring pollinators in the garden, The Bugman, live music, food trucks and demonstrations, and more at the Scotts Miracle-Gro Company Community Garden Campus at Franklin Park Conservatory.

WHY: June is National Pollinator Month, and June 17-23 is National Pollinator Week. Pollinators such as honeybees, monarch butterflies and other insects are a vital component of our ecosystem and an essential link to the world’s food supply – but the U.S. has seen a 30 percent annual decline of pollinators over the last 30 years.
In a shared mission to protect pollinators and their habitats, the ScottsMiracle-Gro Foundation, through its Gro More Good initiative, partnered with the National Recreation and Parks Association (NRPA) to launch a nationwide Parks for Pollinators BioBiltz campaign to raise awareness and community involvement in the pollinator crisis and decline.
The BioBlitz campaign is part of the Foundations’ Gro More Good commitment which is supported by ScottsMiracle-Gro’s leading branded products, including Ortho®, Miracle-Gro® and Scotts® and is committed to connect 10 million children to the benefits of gardens and greenspaces by 2023.
In addition to its Gro More Good initiative, ScottsMiracle-Gro has engaged in a multiyear Pollinator Promise effort since 2015 to help home gardeners, community gardeners and urban planners understand the critical role pollinators play in our ecosystem and to provide them with the tools necessary to grow successful pollinator gardens.
