In response to novel coronavirus responsible for the COVID-19 disease, Governor Mike DeWine declared a state of emergency in Ohio to protect the well-being of Ohioans from the dangerous effects of COVID-19 coronavirus in Columbus and throughout Ohio.
MOST events and activities are canceled, postponed, or adapted as a precaution to prevent the spread of coronavirus in Columbus.
Ongoing changes and cancellations regarding COVID-19 Coronavirus in Columbus
High School Athletics: Ohio High School Athletic Association will limit the number of fans at regional and state tournaments to help stop the spread of coronavirus. Attendance will be limited to four family members per athlete and two family members per coach. All previously purchased tickets are void, according to the OHSAA. Read the OHSAA press release for more details. The state girls basketball tournament takes place March 12-14 at Ohio State’s St. John Arena, followed by the state wrestling tournament March 13-15 at Value City Arena and the state hockey tournament March 14 and 15 at Nationwide Arena. The strategy will be in effect through at least the state boys basketball tournament scheduled for March 19-21 at Ohio State’s Value City Arena.

Colleges and Universities Cancellation and Changes
In response to Governor Mike DeWine recommendations that colleges and universities move to online courses, most colleges and universities in Ohio have moved to online instruction for the time being. Please check to see when universities will return to in-class schedule, as this may change frequently in the upcoming weeks. The list below is not a full and complete listing of all of these changes. Please use the links below to check for any changes after March 11.
The Ohio State University: In-person classes and non-essential events are canceled through at least March. Buckeyes’ spring football game on April 11 is still on schedule (as of 3/11). This includes all branches.
Columbus State Community College: In-person instruction at College campuses and regional learning centers is suspended for a length of time to be determined. Classes will move to alternative delivery using digital channels and other methods beginning on March 23. Classes are canceled for the week of March 16.
Franklin University: Moving to online format effective March 11 through the end of the spring term on May 9. All events scheduled through the end of the term will be postponed until further notice and no new events will be scheduled.
Capital University: Classes are CANCELED for Wednesday, March 11, through Saturday, March 14, as we move to alternative delivery formats; University offices, residence halls, dining facilities and other support services remain open and regular business continues. Effective Monday, March 16, all University classes will be moved online at least through March 31, and we will reevaluate the situation continuously. All on campus events are canceled. Indoor sporting events will be held without spectators other than athletes, parents and others essential to the game.
Denison University: Transition to remote learning from March 23 until at least through April 3, with the possibility of extending through the end of the semester. The library will remain open. All students are expected to leave campus by Monday, March 16, through at least April 3. There is a very real possibility that we will extend remote learning through the end of the semester, therefore we strongly encourage students to take all of their belongings if at all possible, and especially all items and materials they need to continue their studies remotely. A subsequent notice to students will provide more information about packing and moving support.Students with exceptional reasons to stay on campus, including international students, can request to remain.
Ohio University: No in-person classes. Online instruction would begins and lasts through at least March 30. All students who traveled home over spring break are encouraged to stay at home, and those who were traveling over spring break are also asked not to return to campus during this timeframe. Students who live in residence halls on-campus are not to return to campus after spring break unless they request and receive prior authorization by contacting housing@ohio.edu or 740-593-4090. All planned Ohio University events, except Ohio University athletic events, will be postponed, canceled or moved to alternate formats through March 30, 2020.
Otterbein: Residence halls and dining services will remain open, although most public gatherings and events are canceled through March 27. All in-person classes on-campus are suspended through March 15 to move to alternative delivery modes. This includes classes at The Knowlton Equine Center. Classes will be moved to remote learning or other options beginning on Monday, March 16. Outdoor athletic practice and contests will continue as normal. Indoor events will continue without spectators.
Ohio Wesleyan University: All classes are canceled Monday and Tuesday, March 16 and 17, as faculty prepare to offer all classes remotely. All classes will be taught utilizing remote teaching and learning from Wednesday, March 18, through Sunday, March 29.
Kent State University: In-person classes were canceled until April 12 and remote instruction will begin March 16. In person-classes will resume April 13. Residence halls will remain open with reduced dining options
Miami University: No in-person classes would be held and that remote instruction would last at least until April 12. Residence halls, dining halls and all campus services will remain open. All on-essential large gatherings, including University-related social gatherings are canceled or postponed. All non-essential events planned for greater than 150 attendees are being canceled or postponed.
Central State: Classes from March 23 through April 4 will be held remotely.
University of Dayton: Classes are canceled the three days before spring break, March 11-13. For the two weeks after spring break, students will conduct classes remotely. All University-sponsored events and gatherings are canceled effective Wednesday, March 11 until further notice.
University of Akron: The University stopped instruction at 5 p.m. Tuesday, March 10 at all sites, including online and law classes. No classes will be held the rest of this week or next week to allow faculty time to develop their plans for migrating their courses online when the University returns from spring break on March 30. In addition, the University is canceling all large events previously scheduled on campus from now until at least April 20. Residence halls will remain open.
The University of Toledo: Classes have been canceled Monday, March 16 and Tuesday, March 17. All academic courses will resume Wednesday, March 18 with remote delivery through March 30. Residence halls, libraries, recreation centers and dining halls remain open. The University is canceling all gatherings and events of more than 100 people through at least April 30, 2020
